1.What is ATEX Certification?

ATEX is a mandatory safety certification established by the EU for equipment used in explosive atmospheres (flammable gases, vapors, mists, or combustible dusts). The name comes from the French “ATmosphères EXplosibles”. The current directive is 2014/34/EU, effective from April 20, 2016, replacing the old 94/9/EC.

The scope covers electrical equipment (explosion-proof motors, lights, sensors) and non-electrical equipment (explosion-proof pumps, valves, fans) as well as safety components. Its core goal is to protect the health and safety of workers, as well as property and domestic animals.

Simply put: if you sell equipment to Europe for use in oil fields, chemical plants, grain mills, spray booths, or gas stations, it must pass ATEX certification. Without this certificate, the equipment cannot be legally placed on the EU market or used in hazardous areas.

2.Which Countries and Regions Require ATEX? (Complete List)

RegionSpecific CountriesEU 27 Member StatesGermany, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Poland, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Portugal, Greece, Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Cyprus, Luxembourg, MaltaEFTA Four CountriesSwitzerland, Norway, Iceland, LiechtensteinOtherTurkey, United Kingdom (UKCA, same technical requirements)

3.ATEX Explosion Protection Categories Explained (with Technical Data)

ATEX divides hazardous areas into three zones based on the duration a flammable gas atmosphere is present:

ZoneFrequency of HazardAnnual DurationRequired Equipment CategoryZone 0Continuous or long-term> 1000 hours/yearCategory 1 (Highest protection)Zone 1Occasional during normal operation10-1000 hours/yearCategory 2Zone 2Only under abnormal conditions, short< 10 hours/yearCategory 3 (Lowest protection)

The same applies to dust environments: Zones 20/21/22, with the same annual duration criteria.

4.Why is ATEX Important?

Legal AspectSpecific RequirementsEU Directive 2014/34/EUThis directive is a mandatory legal document. For equipment sold or used in the EU, it must obtain ATEX certification and bear the CE mark. The manufacturer must sign an EU Declaration of Conformity. Uncertified products are illegal and cannot be placed on the market.Mandatory Notified Body InvolvementFor high-risk equipment used in Zone 0/1, the law requires an EU Notified Body to review and issue the certificate. Companies cannot self-declare conformity.Consequences of Non-ComplianceAccording to Article 51, each member state must establish penalties. Typical consequences include: product recalls, market withdrawal, administrative fines. If a major accident results from uncertified equipment, responsible individuals may face criminal liability. Additionally, lack of ATEX certification can lead to denied insurance claims and disqualification from major end-user bids.
