IECEx Certification: Quick Guide to the International Explosion Proof Standard

1.What Is IECEx Certification?

IECEx is a global certification system created by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Its full name is “IEC System for Certification to Standards Relating to Equipment for Use in Explosive Atmospheres.” It is based on the IEC 60079 series, which corresponds to the EU’s 2014/34/EU (ATEX Directive), and has been operating since 2003.
It covers electrical equipment (explosion proof lights, motors, sensors), non-electrical equipment (pumps, valves, fans), and repair services. The core idea is “one certificate for global use”, helping reduce repeated testing and certification barriers.
Simply put, IECEx greatly simplifies international trade for equipment used in high-risk areas like oil fields, chemical plants, and mines.

2.Which Countries Recognize IECEx? (Full Member List)

IECEx is a voluntary international certification system. Although it has a limited number of member countries, its certificates are widely accepted in over 90 countries worldwide. In the Middle East (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, etc.) and Australia, it is often a de facto market access requirement. Many international projects (Shell, BP, Saudi Aramco, etc.) make it mandatory.

3.IECEx Zone Classification

IECEx divides hazardous areas into three zones based on the duration a flammable gas atmosphere is present:
