In professional lighting, “waterproof” is not a feeling. It’s a rating.
According to IEC 60529, ingress protection (IP) defines resistance to dust and water:
- IP65: Protected against water jets
- IP66: Protected against powerful water jets
- IP67: Temporary immersion
For most waterproof LED flood lights outdoor, IP66 is the practical minimum. IP65 may survive light rain. It does not survive wind-driven water.

Why not IP67?
Because flood lights are not designed for immersion. Attempting to “over-spec” often introduces pressure equalization problems, which can pull moisture in during temperature swings.
Good waterproofing is balanced, not extreme.

- Always mount with drainage in mind
- Avoid upward-facing cable entry
- Use certified outdoor connectors only
- Never cut factory cable glands
