This project started with a discussion around fixture type rather than wattage. The football field already had mounting positions prepared, and the customer wanted something straightforward to install and service later. Our first proposal was XJ-HBS high bays, mainly based on lumen output and previous sports projects.

The customer pushed back on that. Their concern wasn’t performance. It was access.

High bays would have meant more effort during future maintenance. For an outdoor football field, that mattered. After a few calls and drawings back and forth, we shifted the direction to flood lighting.

Fixture Selection

Once flood lights were confirmed, the XJ-FLX400W became the obvious option within our range. Power level matched the field size, and the housing was familiar to the installation team. No special brackets were required, which simplified things.

At this point, the focus moved to calculations.

Lighting Calculations

We ran multiple layouts to check uniformity and glare control. Football fields are less forgiving than parking areas. Light spill outside the boundary lines was something we paid attention to, especially given the surrounding environment.

Pole height and aiming angles were adjusted more than once on paper before anything went on site. We didn’t try to push numbers higher than needed. The goal was compliance, not excess.

Installation and On-Site Checks

Installation followed the agreed layout. led Flood lights were easier for the local team to handle, which confirmed the customer’s initial preference. After installation, aiming took time. Small changes made visible differences on the field surface.

We walked the field at night, checked shadows near goal areas, and adjusted again.

The final setup met the required lighting levels and safety expectations. From a project standpoint, the main takeaway was fixture choice. Flood lighting aligned better with how the field would actually be used and maintained.
