XJ-FLA480W Flood Lights installed at port facility
Flood lights installed following revised lighting calculation.

This project was carried out at a port facility in Frankfurt. From the beginning, the requirement was clear and measurable: the customer needed specific lux levels across working zones. This was not a space where approximate lighting would be accepted. Operations depended on visibility, and the numbers mattered.

Our initial proposal was based on high bay fixtures.

Initial Approach and Limitation

We first used XJ-HBS240W high bay lights in the lighting plan. Based on mounting height and spacing, the approach looked reasonable. High bays are often used in large industrial areas, and in some port projects they work without issue.

After running the calculation and reviewing expected lux levels, it became clear that this setup would not reach the customer’s target values. The limitation was not fixture quality, but beam control and application type. The light was not reaching the ground with enough intensity across the required area.

At that point, continuing with high bays would have meant adding more fixtures or pushing the layout beyond what the site allowed.

Reconsidering the Fixture Type

We paused and looked at the space again, not the product list. The area behaved more like an open industrial yard than a covered hall. That changed the logic. Instead of forcing a high bay solution, we switched to a flood light approach.

The XJ-FLA480W LED Flood Light was selected for recalculation. The higher power and wider application range made it more suitable for covering large, open zones from fixed mounting positions.

Recalculation and Verification

With the XJ-FLA480W, we ran a new lighting calculation. This time, the lux levels aligned with the customer’s specifications. Coverage was more predictable, especially in areas that previously fell short under the high bay layout.

We shared the revised calculation with the customer before moving forward. There were no requests for further adjustment.

Installation and Outcome

Installation followed the updated plan. The flood lights were positioned according to the recalculated layout, with no changes made on site. Once powered on, the measured and perceived light levels matched expectations.

The customer confirmed that the working areas met their requirements. From a project standpoint, this was a reminder that fixture category matters as much as wattage. High bays and flood lights solve different problems, even when power ratings overlap.

For this High Power Flood Lighting for Port Area project, the result came from stopping early enough to change direction.
