In coastal industrial zones, lighting needs to meet both strict explosion-proof safety standards and marine environmental protection rules. 590nm amber explosion proof LED lights have become a popular choice for ports, oil and gas platforms, and coastal chemical plants. They keep workers safe while greatly reducing harm to sea turtles and other marine life.
How 590nm Amber Lights Work
Sea turtles mainly use short-wavelength blue and green light (400-550nm) to find their way to the ocean. Normal white and cool white lights contain a lot of these short wavelengths, which confuses baby sea turtles and makes them crawl toward land instead of the sea.
That’s why 590nm amber lights are designed this way:
The 590nm wavelength is long enough that sea turtles can barely see it.
At the same time, it still provides enough light for people to work safely.
By carefully controlling the light spectrum, these lights meet explosion-proof standards (Class I Division 2 / Zone 2) while being friendly to sea turtles.
Relevant Regulations
IECEx, ATEX, UL844
Coastal sea turtle protection rules (longer wavelengths above 590nm are recommended)
