Lighting at a gas station isn’t just about making things bright — it’s a serious safety and compliance issue.
The short answer? In Europe, yes — you must use ATEX-certified explosion-proof lights.
Here’s why it’s non-negotiable:
Directive 2014/34/EU (ATEX 114) requires that any electrical equipment used in potentially explosive atmospheres — including lights — must be properly designed, certified, and carry the CE + ATEX marking.
Directive 1999/92/EC (ATEX 137) puts the responsibility on the operator/employer to assess explosion risks, classify zones, and only use suitable equipment to protect workers.
Gas station canopies and fueling areas are typically classified as Zone 2 (gas) or Zone 22 (dust). Regular lights can spark, overheat, or fail in ways that ignite fuel vapors — something nobody wants to deal with.
Using non-certified lights doesn’t just risk fines or shutdowns — it can create real legal liability if something goes wrong. Most European projects and insurance companies now treat ATEX certification as a must-have.
