This project was not treated as a standard outdoor lighting job. From the first discussion, it was clear that the building itself set the rules. The National Theatre is a historic structure, and any lighting intervention had to respect the existing facade rather than compete with it.
The request was simple on paper: improve nighttime visibility and highlight architectural features. In practice, it meant working within fixed mounting positions and avoiding excessive brightness that could flatten the details of the building.
We selected the FLE Series 100W LED Flood Light after reviewing the scale of the facade and surrounding environment. Higher wattages were discussed briefly but ruled out. The building does not need to be “bright” in the conventional sense. It needs readable surfaces, controlled contrast, and even coverage across columns and walls.
The XJ-FLE100W offered enough output for facade washing without pushing glare into nearby pedestrian areas. That balance was important, especially since visitors approach the theatre from multiple directions.
Installation was done using existing mounting points as much as possible. This limited flexibility, so beam direction became critical. We spent time adjusting angles to avoid hard shadows under decorative elements.
During the first nighttime test, some areas appeared slightly uneven. We corrected this by small aiming adjustments rather than changing fixture positions. After that, the facade read clearly from a distance, while closer details remained visible without harsh highlights.
Once fully illuminated, the building stood out without looking overlit. Light distribution stayed consistent across the main facade, and the structure remained visually calm rather than dramatic.
From an engineering perspective, this was a controlled lighting application. There was no need for dynamic effects or color changes. The goal was steady, reliable illumination that works every evening without adjustment.
Energy efficiency was discussed later, mainly from an operational standpoint. Compared to older lighting systems, the load was lower, but that was not the driving factor during design.
This Illuminating the National Theatre in Narodno pozorište project stayed focused on restraint—letting the building speak, and keeping the lighting in the background.
