Why Are My LED Lights Flickering?

News LED Light FAQ 3190

Question:
Why are my LED lights flickering even though they are new and recently installed?

Answer:
This is one of the most common questions we receive, and in most cases, the issue is not caused by the LED itself. Flickering usually comes from how the lighting system is powered, controlled, or installed.

From an engineering perspective, LED lights react faster to electrical changes than traditional lamps. This makes them efficient, but also more sensitive to problems elsewhere in the circuit.

Below are the situations we see most often in real projects.

1. Incompatible or Unstable LED Driver

A frequent reason behind why LED lights flicker is the driver. If the driver output does not match the LED load, small voltage fluctuations can cause visible flicker.

This often happens when:

  • A constant-current LED is paired with the wrong driver
  • The driver is operating close to its minimum load
  • Low-quality drivers are used in long-hour applications

In industrial and outdoor projects, driver stability matters more than peak efficiency.

2. Flickering When the Light Is Turned Off

If you are asking why are my LED lights flickering when turned off, the cause is usually residual current in the circuit.

This can come from:

  • Illuminated wall switches
  • Poor grounding
  • Long cable runs that allow small leakage currents

Because LEDs need very little power to glow, even tiny currents can make them flash briefly.

3. Dimmer Switch Compatibility Issues

Another common question is why are my LED lights flickering on a dimmer switch.

Not all dimmers are designed for LED loads. Traditional dimmers were built for incandescent lamps and work differently. When paired with LEDs, they can cause:

  • Flickering at low brightness
  • Sudden jumps in light output
  • Audible noise from the driver

Using an LED-rated dimmer usually solves this problem.

4. Loose Wiring or Poor Connections

In both residential and commercial installations, flickering can also be caused by simple mechanical issues.

Loose terminals, aging connectors, or vibration in industrial environments can interrupt current flow for a fraction of a second. With LEDs, this interruption becomes visible immediately.

This is often the reason why LED lights flicker randomly, especially in factories or outdoor fixtures.

5. Voltage Fluctuations in the Power Supply

In some regions, unstable grid voltage is unavoidable. LED lighting responds instantly to voltage changes, while older light sources may hide the problem.

In these cases, using drivers with wider input voltage tolerance helps reduce flicker.

How SEEKINGLED Addresses LED Flickering

At SEEKINGLED, flicker prevention starts at the system level. Our LED lighting products use matched drivers, controlled assembly processes, and stable electrical design.

Rather than relying on after-install fixes, we focus on reducing flicker risks during product development, especially for LED High Bay Light, LED Street Light, LED Flood Light, and LED Tri-proof Lamp used in long-hour projects.

When to Investigate Further

If flickering continues after checking drivers, wiring, and dimmers, the issue may be related to the power network itself. In that case, a site-level electrical inspection is recommended.

LED flickering is usually solvable, but it requires looking beyond the lamp.
