LED High Bay Replacement for Gym Lighting: XJ-HBL120W Gym Project in Australia

News LED Light Project 2130

Project Location: Australia
Application: Indoor Gym / Sports Facility
Product Model: XJ-HBL120W
Brand: SEEKINGLED

This project dates back to October 2014. The site was an indoor gym that had been operating for years with 400W metal halide lamps. By the time we were contacted, the problem was no longer just energy use. The lamps had aged badly. Light output had dropped, color had shifted toward yellow, and some areas of the gym felt uneven, especially during evening use.

At first, the request sounded straightforward: replace the old metal halide fixtures with LED high bays and keep the mounting points unchanged. But once we reviewed the space and ceiling height, we knew we had to be careful with output.

On-Site Evaluation and Initial Test

The gym ceiling was high, but not extreme. The original metal halide lamps were spaced relatively wide, which explained why light loss had become so obvious over time. We initially tested the XJ-HBL150W model. On paper, it looked like a safe replacement.

After measuring lux levels on the floor, it became clear that the output was higher than necessary. Certain zones, especially near training equipment, were too bright. That was not what the gym operator wanted. Glare and discomfort matter more in a sports environment than in a warehouse.

At that point, we paused rather than pushing the higher wattage.

Adjusting the Plan

We recalculated using the XJ-HBL120W LED High Bay Light. Same fixture structure, same installation method, lower power. Once installed for testing, the difference was obvious in a good way. Light levels were more balanced, and the floor readings aligned better with how the space was actually used.

This step mattered. LED High Bay Replacement for Gym Lighting is not just about matching wattage numbers from old lamps. Metal halide depreciation hides how much light people think they need.

Installation Notes

The existing mounting points were reused, which reduced installation time. No changes were made to ceiling structure. Beam distribution from the XJ-HBL120W worked with the original spacing, so we didn’t need to add fixtures or shift positions.

During operation, the gym staff noted that the space felt clearer but not harsh. That was the intended result. The goal was usable light for training, not maximum brightness.

After Installation

There were no further adjustments after commissioning. The lighting remained fixed, and the gym continued normal operation without complaints about glare or dark zones.

From an engineering perspective, this project reinforced a simple point: testing on site matters. If we had stayed with the initial 150W option, the outcome would have been less comfortable, even if the numbers looked good.
